Project Background

Slate School is a nonprofit independent K-6 institution in North Haven, Connecticut, emphasizing nature conservancy and inquiry-based learning. The campus comprises six academic structures totaling approximately 6,000 square feet, including four classrooms, a multipurpose space, and a library/administration building. The design focuses on creating outdoor learning environments, with buildings opening directly onto gardens and open spaces.

The Challenge

The project aimed to construct one of the most environmentally friendly schools in the country, incorporating principles from LEED, WELL, Passive House, the Collaboration for High Performance Schools, and the Living Building Challenge. This required all construction materials to undergo independent inspection to meet high ecological and environmental standards.

The Solution

C&H Electric collaborated closely with Gilbane Building Company to integrate electrical systems that aligned with the school’s sustainability goals. The team ensured that all electrical installations met the stringent environmental criteria set forth by the various sustainability certifications pursued by the project.

The Results

The successful completion of the Slate School provided a healthy, environmentally friendly, and ecologically responsible learning environment for students. The project has been recognized as one of the most environmentally friendly schools in the country, reflecting the commitment to sustainability and excellence in construction.
