Project Background
Nutmeg Bakery, a commercial baking facility in Hartford, CT, undertook a full relocation and expansion to a new 80,000 sq. ft. facility at 150 Meadow Street. The goal was to modernize operations and significantly scale production capacity to serve 329 local Dunkin’ franchisees. The upgraded facility now supports production of up to 500,000 donuts per day. This fast-tracked project ran from January 2024 to May 2025, requiring intensive coordination between C&H Electric and the design team to keep up with continuous scope changes and evolving equipment requirements.
The Problem
Due to the fast-track nature of the project – construction commenced without finalized engineering for the production equipment which posed major logistical challenges. The ongoing engineering demanded continuous revisions to shop drawings and installation plans. Additionally, coordinating power feeds for a large volume of high-demand baking equipment—while meeting a strict production readiness deadline—required constant communication and flexibility from the field team and project management alike.
The Challenges
To navigate the evolving scope and fast-track schedule, C&H Electric deployed a dedicated design/assist team that remained fully engaged throughout the build. The team installed three (3) 500kW Cummins Diesel Generators with a full-building automatic transfer switch (ATS) for backup power. Provisions were also made for future rooftop solar expansion with an additional 1,000 amps allocated. Close collaboration with major equipment vendors, including Moline and White Industries, ensured that the electrical infrastructure met the unique demands of the production systems.
The Results
Despite the aggressive schedule and fluid project scope, the team successfully completed the 16-month buildout on time. The upgraded facility now delivers high-capacity output to meet the demands of 329 Dunkin’ locations across the region. C&H Electric’s integration of advanced power systems and commitment to flexibility enabled Nutmeg Bakery to expand production, ensure resiliency with backup power, and prepare for future energy efficiency upgrades.
