Project Background

C&H Electric provided electrical contracting services for the installation of a new Varian Linear Accelerator (LINAC) suite at Yale New Haven Hospital. This facility, located in the lower level of the Smilow Cancer Center, now houses advanced radiation therapy technology designed for greater precision in tumor targeting. Over the 16-week installation period, C&H Electric worked closely with the general contractor, Petra Construction, to deliver this highly technical build with minimal disruption to hospital operations. The project incorporated specialty C-RAD low-voltage lighting systems that guide patients through each therapy stage and required deep coordination with equipment engineers to meet strict specifications.

The Challenges

This project presented several challenges that demanded close coordination. The team had to integrate power systems that matched Varian’s exact specifications for their oncology equipment. Additionally, all electrical shutdowns had to be carefully planned and executed to avoid interfering with hospital operations, and adjustments to data and telecom infrastructure were needed due to room reconfigurations.

The Solution

C&H Electric addressed these complexities through proactive collaboration with Varian’s engineering team to ensure all electrical requirements were met. The team installed specialty C-RAD low-voltage lighting that enhances patient experience by guiding them through different stages of treatment. All critical power tie-ins were performed during off-peak hospital hours to minimize disruptions, and the field team reworked data and telecom drops to align with the new room layout and functional design.

The Results

The project was delivered within the 16-week timeline, ensuring that the Smilow Cancer Center could immediately begin offering enhanced cancer treatment capabilities. C&H Electric’s work allowed for the seamless integration of Varian’s advanced radiation technology, meeting all compliance standards and operational demands. The successful installation of both the power and low-voltage systems directly supported the hospital’s ability to offer more precise and efficient cancer care.
